An after meeting idea brought conference closer to home

For years, it had been customary for the Amarillo Genealogical Society to make a trek to the annual one-day genealogical conference sponsored by the Wilson Cobb Genealogical Library in Roswell, New Mexico.  A few members of the South Plains Genealogical Society also participated.  Us Texans would have a grand time!  It wasn’t uncommon for a number of folks from the Amarillo society to win door prizes – there were so many of them to choose from!

We would usually get together for a meal following the Saturday conference and share our experiences before we headed home the following morning.  In 2017 we gathered at the Cattle Baron restaurant, and Amarillo had reserved a l-o-n-g table for us all to gather around.  At some point the topic of having a conference a bit closer to home came up as one of the Amarillo members approached me with the idea of our societies sponsoring an annual conference.

The more we talked and bounced around ideas, the more excited we became with the prospect of an event which would benefit us all and be closer to home.  We began pursuing the idea vigorously, a committee was formed, and we began to strategize.  A name was chosen, a logo adopted, details began falling into place with teamwork.  Amazingly, we were able to come together and conduct our very first Caprock Genealogy Conference on April 14, 2018 on the campus of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, in conjunction with the Plainview Genealogical Society.

It was an amazing day with a large turnout ... we had done it!  In the years since, we have changed venues, and in 2020 and 2021 faced the challenge of navigating around the COVID era by holding a virtual conference.  Lots of hard work and planning goes into each conference and it’s well worth your time and expense to come and gain more skills, meet other like-minded folks and encourage one another to keep digging!
